Without the Overwhelm

If you are new to low-tox living, you do not need to replace your entire makeup bag and bathroom cabinet this week (or this year). The goal is not perfection—it is less “toxic load” over time, in a way that still fits real mom life.

When I first started paying attention (hello, pregnancy ingredient rabbit holes), I tried so many “clean” products that either did nothing… or worked for about 12 minutes. Deodorant and dry shampoo were the worst offenders for me. And after getting tired of greenwashing, I decided I wanted swaps that felt simple, effective, and actually aligned with my low-tox goals.

My “big impact” rule of thumb:

  1. Daily use (deodorant, lotion)
  2. Breath-zone products (sprays + fragrance you inhale—perfume, hairspray, dry shampoo)
  3. Large surface area (lotion + sunscreen)

That is it. No panic. Just priorities.

The 5 biggest-impact swaps I recommend starting with

1) Deodorant (because it is daily + it lives in a sensitive area)

What I look for: aluminum-free, no vague “fragrance,” minimal ingredients I can recognize.

My favorite: Primally Pure – they have lots of scents, but my favorite is the vanilla citrus.

Ingredient snapshot: Organic arrowroot powder, organic coconut oil, baking soda, organic tallow, organic beeswax, non-nano zinc oxide, essential oils/extracts, vitamin E.

Why this is a “big impact” swap: it is a daily product, and many conventional options can include things people prefer to avoid (like aluminum salts and “fragrance” blends).

Quick real-life tip: If you are switching from conventional deodorant, give your body a week or two to adjust. Sometimes there is an “is this working??” phase before it gets better.

2) Perfume (biggest “breath zone” swap)

Perfume is one of the most “constant exposure” products because you are not just wearing it—you are breathing it in.

My favorite: DIME Beauty – My favorite scent is 7 Summers, but they have so many to choose from. If you don’t know where to start, they have a sample set you can get to help you decide which scent is right for you!

Ingredient snapshot: Their product page lists an ingredient blend including water, dipropylene glycol, and fragrance components like vanillin and others.

Why this is a “big impact” swap: Fragrance is a category where ingredient transparency varies a lot, and many moms prefer to choose brands that disclose more and avoid certain common additives.

How I use it: One spritz goes a long way.

3) Dry shampoo (because it is both breath zone + scalp)

Dry shampoo is one of those “busy mom survival” products… but many conventional versions are aerosolized and heavily fragranced. After trying a few low-tox options that didn’t work well or left my hair feeling gross, I’m so glad I finally found one that I love.

My favorite: Hair Dance: Dry Shampoo Powder – You can purchase it on Amazon or TikTok Shop.

Ingredient snapshot: Organic rice starch, organic colloidal oatmeal, silica, lavender oil, olive leaf.

Why this is a “big impact” swap: it sits right on your scalp and is easy to inhale when you apply it—so I prefer a non-aerosol powder with a short ingredient list.

How to use: Section hair, apply to roots, massage in, brush through.

4) Sunscreen (because it is large surface area)

Chemical sunscreens are filled with horrible ingredients that you do not want to put on your skin. But some mineral sunscreens can be hard to use. It’s all about finding one that you can feel good about using.

My favorite: Sky & Sol – Face & Body Sunscreen – You can get it on Amazon or the TikTok Shop.

Why I like it: They describe it as a non-nano zinc oxide formula and note it has no chemical UV filters like oxybenzone or octinoxate.

Ingredient callouts listed on their ingredients page: cold-pressed jojoba, non-nano zinc oxide, beeswax, sunflower lecithin, babassu starch, grass-fed tallow, distilled water, radish root ferment filtrate (and more).

Practical tip: Mineral sunscreens can feel different than chemical ones. If you have ever hated the “white cast,” try applying in thin layers and warming it between your fingers first.

5) Lotion / moisturizer (because it is daily + often full-body)

Lotion is sneaky because it feels harmless—but if you are applying it daily, it adds up quickly. That’s why it’s important to be intentional with the moisturizer you choose to use.

My favorite: Sun & Moo – The Soother (Tallow + Frankincense Resin)

Ingredient snapshot: Grass-fed & Grass-Finished Suet Tallow, Organic Frankincense Resin

Why this is a “big impact” swap: it is a high-frequency product for many people (especially in winter, postpartum skin dryness, kid handwashing seasons… you know). A simple ingredient list is a win.

The “60-second” ingredient scan

If you want a quick filter when you are shopping, here are common things many low-tox shoppers choose to avoid or minimize:

No fear. Just awareness—and you pick what matters most for your family.

If you only start with ONE swap…

Pick the one you use every day and that lives in your breath zone.

For most moms, that is: deodorant or fragrance first. Then dry shampoo. Then sunscreen + lotion.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to throw everything away and start over?

No, just replace items as you run out, starting with your daily products.

What swaps make the biggest difference the fastest?

Deodorant, perfume/fragrance, and dry shampoo tend to be the quickest “high-impact” wins because they’re used often and/or inhaled.

Why is “fragrance/parfum” such a big deal?

It can be a catch-all term for a blend of ingredients, some of which can be extremely harmful.

Is mineral sunscreen better—and will it leave a white cast?

Mineral sunscreens (zinc oxide) are a much safer, low-tox choice. Some brands leave a white cast. Try warming it up by rubbing it between your hands before applying it to help reduce the white cast appearance.

What if “clean” deodorant or dry shampoo doesn’t work for me?

That’s normal, as it can take some time for your skin and hair to adjust. Try to give it 1–2 weeks, and if it still doesn’t work (or irritates you), try a different brand/product.
