If you’re like me, you want your hand soap to do two things:

  1. actually clean your hands
  2. not leave them feeling like you sanded a drywall ceiling afterward

This foaming Castile hand soap is one of my favorite “low-effort, big impact” home swaps. It takes maybe 2 minutes, costs pennies per refill once you have the basics, and you can make it lavender-lemon spa vibes… or keep it totally unscented.

Recipe ratios inspired by Happy Money Saver’s Castile hand soap tutorial (and adapted for a foaming dispenser).

What You Need

Ingredients

  • Distilled water (helps it stay fresher longer)
  • Unscented liquid Castile soap
  • Fractionated coconut oil (or another light oil)
  • Essential oils (optional) for scent

Tools

  • Foaming soap dispenser (this recipe is specifically for the foaming pump)

Foaming Hand Soap Recipe (Fits Most Standard Foam Bottles)

In your foaming dispenser:

  1. Fill the bottle about 80% full with distilled water.
  2. Add 2 tablespoons Castile soap.
  3. Add 2 teaspoons fractionated coconut oil.
  4. Add essential oils (optional) — just a few drops.
  5. Screw on the top and gently swirl (don’t shake like crazy or you’ll get bubbles right away).

That’s it. Pump and enjoy the fluffy foam.

My Favorite Scent Blends (Or Keep It Unscented!)

You can absolutely leave this unscented—especially if you’re sensitive to scents or you’re making a “safe for everyone” bathroom soap.

But if you want it to smell clean and cozy, here are my go-to blends using what you love:

1) Clean + Calm (everyday favorite)

  • Lavender

2) “My bathroom feels like a spa”

  • Eucalyptus + Lemon

3) Relaxing but still fresh

  • Lavender + Eucalyptus (go light on eucalyptus)

Tip: Start with fewer drops, then add more next refill if you want it stronger.

Quick Tips So It Foams Like It Should

  • Less soap = better foam. Foaming dispensers work best with a more diluted mix.
  • Oil + water will separate sometimes. Totally normal—just give the bottle a gentle swirl or shake every so often.
  • Distilled water is worth it (especially if you’re refilling the same bottle for weeks).
  • You can swap fractionated coconut oil with olive, grapeseed, jojoba, or sweet almond oil if that’s what you have.
